WSET Exams Grading for Levels 1-3

We often receive questions about the grading for the various levels of WSET Wine Studies. This information is always available in the Course Specification document for each level, but we thought it would be useful to include it here.

WSET Level 1 Award in Wines

The exam consists of 30 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 45 minutes.

To pass, you must correctly answer at least 70% of the questions.

The full specification, including the examination criteria, is available here.

WSET L3 Tasting Exam Grading and how to get full marks

Understanding how the WSET L3 Tasting Exam is assessed can significantly increase your chances of success.

The examination will consist of two blind wines and will assess a candidate’s ability to accurately describe a wine and draw conclusions based on these observations. The tasting examination must be completed in 30 minutes.

In order to get full marks, you need to closely follow the L3 Systematic Approach to Tasting - marks are awarded based on how accurately and consistently you apply it.

This is how marks are distributed:

The tasting exam is worth 41 marks in total. To pass the tasting paper, you need at least 55% (i.e., 23/50).

WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT)

The Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT) was developed by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) to provide a structured method for evaluating wines.

It becomes an important and familiar part of WSET studies (and beyond) and provides a common framework and terminology to describe any wine relevant for your WSET level.

By following and eventually memorising the SAT, students are able to:

  • Build the habit of evaluating wines, even outside classroom environment.

  • Understand different wine characteristics and how they relate

  • Learn to use a standardized lexicon to ensures that descriptions of wines are consistent and understandable across different individuals, languages and cultures.

Tasting Group

Hi everyone,

Really glad this forum was created to foster a sense of community! I'm Ercin, currently working in a non-wine-related sector but studying for the WSET Diploma at the Austrian Wine Academy.

I'm happy to connect with fellow students or anyone interested in practicing tasting. Feel free to reach out (ercincoskun@hotmail.com or instagram ercincoskun) if you're interested!

Best,

Ercin
