    About this course

    • The Spanish Wine Scholar (SWS) programme is the most advanced and comprehensive certification course on the wines of Spain. With a school network encompassing 30 countries on 5 continents, the SWS credential has true international recognition.

    • The syllabus takes a regional approach and discusses all Spanish wine appellations and the factors that shape their identities. It provides committed students of wine with an unparalleled set of study tools that are designed to maximize learning and boost knowledge retention.

     

    Entry requirements

    • Enthusiastic interest in the Spanish wine, geography and gastronomy.
    • WSET Level 2 Award in Wines or an equivalent level of experience is recommended for entry to the Spanish Wine Scholar programme.
    • SWS is also a great supplement for students enrolled in WSET Level 3 and Level 4 Award in Wines.
    • To enroll in this course candidates must be over the legal minimum age for the retail purchase of alcoholic beverages in Germany.
    • Spanish Wine Scholar study manual is needed to get ready for the course. It is included in the course fee and will be shipped to you upon booking. It is important that you book your place well in advance to allow enough time for delivery of the study pack and private study before attending the course.

     

    Course synopis

    • The Spanish Wine Scholar (SWS) programme is divided into 10 parts. Each focuses on specific wine region that is presented as an integrated whole by explaining the impact of history, the significance of geological events, the importance of topographical markers and the influence of climatic factors on wines.

     

    1. Spanish wine history, wine laws, geography, climate, grape varieties, viticulture and winemaking in depth.
    2. Green Spain: Galicia, Cantabria, Asturias, and País Vasco
    3. The Duero River Valley: Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Toro
    4. La Rioja
    5. The Ebro River Valley: Navarra, Cariñena, Campo de Borja, and Calatayud
    6. Cataluña
    7. The Central Mediterranean Coast
    8. The Meseta: Castilla-La Mancha
    9. Andalucía
    10. The Islands: Balearic and Canary Islands

     

    • Tasting and discribing wines from key Spanish regions in parallel with each of the discussed regions
    • Storage and service of key Spanish wines
    • A guide to regional food and wine pairing

     

    Recommended private study

    You should be prepared to dedicate a minimum of 20 hours (up to 80 depending on previous wine knowledge) to study time outside of the classroom. Please be mindful that a consecutive day course is intensive.

     

    Examination

    • Examination will take place on the last day of the course.
    • Assessment is by a closed-book exam of 100 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 60 minutes.
    • A total mark of 75% is required to achieve a pass.
