    About this course

    • WSET Level 3 Award Spirits is an advanced level qualification for professionals and enthusiasts wishing to acquire a detailed understanding of the spirits of the world and develop the tasting skills required to accurately describe and evaluate a spirit.
    • You will acquire a deep theoretical understanding of the techniques used in spirit production, from the processing of raw materials to post-distillation operations.
    • Through a combination of tasting and the application of theoretical knowledge you will learn to explain confidently why spirits look and taste the way they do and how and why they differ from each other.

     

     Entry requirements

    • WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits or an equivalent level of experience and passing an oline entry test is required for entry to the WSET Level 3 Award in Spirits.
    • You must be at least 18 years old to enrol on this course.

     

    What you will learn

    I. A detailed understanding of the techniques used in spirit production:

    - Processing of raw materials
    - Alcoholic fermentation
    - Distillation
    - Post-distillation practices

    II. Factors affecting the style and quality of spirits, studying eleven core spirit categories in detail:

    - Scotch Whisky
    - Bourbon
    - Rye Whiskey
    - Tennessee Whiskey
    - Cognac
    - Armagnac
    - Caribbean rum
    - Tequila
    - Mezcal
    - Vodka
    - Gin

    III. An overview of 23 additional spirit categories, focusing on:

    - Principal production methods
    - Key styles
    - Key labelling terms

    IV. How to taste and describe spirits using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits® (SAT).

    V. Tutored tasting of 50 spirits from all over the world.

     

    Recommended private study

    This is a highly rewarding yet demanding course, which requires a minimum of 55 hours of private study time. We recommend that you book the course in advance so that you can receive your study materials and complete a significant proportion of our private study hours prior to the course start.

     

    Examination

    • Examination will take place on the last day of the course.
    • Assessment for this qualification comprises of two parts
    1. Part one combines a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a question paper requiring short written answers to four questions. To be completed in 2 hours.
    2. Part two is a tasting examination that will consist of two blind spirits and will assess a candidate’s ability to accurately describe a spirit and draw conclusions based on these observations. To be completed in 30 minutes.
    • A mark of 55% in both the theory and the tasting examination is required to achieve a pass. For the theory examination a candidate will be required to attain a minimum mark of 55% in each section.
