  • Argentinian Malbec: From the Andes to Patagonia

On the eve of Malbec World Day, we are thrilled to present a special masterclass with our guest speaker, Florencia Fontanarossa. Join her for an exploration of Argentina’s flagship variety—one that moves beyond the familiar to reveal the depth, diversity, and fine-wine potential of modern Argentine Malbec.

Malbec has become the unmistakable signature of Argentine wine. Yet beyond its global recognition lies a far more complex and compelling story—one of extreme landscapes, precision viticulture, and a growing focus on terroir expression. Today, Argentina offers some of the most distinctive and diverse interpretations of Malbec in the world.

Framed by the Andes and shaped by altitude, Argentina’s vineyards stretch from the high deserts of Cafayate to the cool, wind-swept plains of Patagonia. Within Mendoza—the country’s viticultural heartland—regions such as Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley reveal striking contrasts in style, structure, and ageing potential. These differences are driven by variations in altitude, soil composition, and mesoclimate, offering a unique lens through which to understand Malbec as a true transmitter of place.

This masterclass is designed for students and professionals seeking a deeper understanding of Argentinian wine through the prism of Malbec. Following a concise overview of Argentina’s geography, climate, and historical development, the session will focus on comparative tasting across key regions. Participants will explore how factors such as elevation, limestone soils, and shifting winemaking philosophies shape the identity of the wines.
