Masterclass: Tawny Port - A Legacy in Every Glass
Join us for an in-depth masterclass dedicated to Tawny Port, led by Pawel Gruntowski DipWSET, Certified Port Educator.
This is the first in a series of classes we are planning on Port.
For this session, we are thrilled to team up with the School of Port and Symington Family Estates for an immersive experience that will trace the origins and distinctive style of Tawny Port, explore the vineyard areas, key grape varieties, production methods, and the ageing classifications that define this unique category of Port.
Typically, Tawny Ports are blends of many different wines that have aged for varying lengths of time in casks or vats. With age, their colour develops the signature tawny hues and spellbindingly complex nutty and dried-fruit flavours.
Once ready, the wines are submitted to the rigorous tasting panel of the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto (IVDP), which assesses them for balance, aromatic complexity, and compliance with the labelled age category.
Under Pawel’s guidance, you will sample a combined 150 years of Tawny Port history — from fresh Tawny and elegant Reserve to rare examples of 10-, 20-, 30-, 40-, and extraordinarily rare 50-year-old Tawny Ports. Each will demonstrate the art of blending and ageing, revealing new layers of flavour, structure, and aromatic nuance at every decade.
Whether you are a wine student, a sommelier or simply curious to experience these wines, this masterclass will show that they are as unmissable as they are rare.
We look forward to seeing you!
