  • The Evolution of Priorat

Join us for an in-depth exploration of one of Spain’s most compelling wine regions—Priorat—guided by guest speaker Alexey Pilin DipWSET.

This masterclass will delve into the region’s dramatic transformation, from its reputation for powerful, concentrated reds to its modern embrace of elegance, balance, and innovation.

    What Makes Priorat Unique?

Nestled in Catalonia’s rugged hills, Priorat is famed for its steep, terraced vineyards and iconic llicorella (slate) soils. The region’s challenging conditions—hot, dry summers, nutrient-poor soils, and old bush vines—result in low yields but wines of remarkable intensity and complexity. Traditionally, Priorat reds are known for their depth, high alcohol, and bold flavors of black cherry, plum, licorice, and chocolate.

A New Era: Elegance and Innovation

What’s particularly exciting today is how some leading producers are redefining Priorat’s style. They are crafting lighter, terroir-driven wines that defy the often unforgiving hot and dry growing conditions. This pursuit of finesse and freshness is especially challenging, yet the results are increasingly impressive.

This session will highlight the innovative spirit of Priorat’s winemakers, who, in just a few decades, have not only put the region on the global wine map but are now reinventing it. The region’s best wines now balance power with elegance.

Expect a guided tasting of wines that showcase this evolution, alongside expert insights into the tumultuous past, present, and future of Priorat.

Whether you are a longtime fan of Priorat’s bold reds or curious about its new wave of elegant wines, this masterclass offers a unique opportunity to discover the dynamic spirit and world-class quality that define this extraordinary region.
