The New Mediterranean
We are delighted to invite you to a masterclass on Mediterranean wines, long typecast as warm and overripe. Around its shores, winemakers are asking harder questions. Where does freshness end and unripeness begin? And is "Mediterranean" a place on the map, or a way of making wine?
Led by Nika Shevela DipWSET, Spanish Wine Scholar instructor, this two-hour class travels from Catalonia to the Aegean, by way of the Balearics and Sicily. Along the route, we taste some of the answers: mountain vineyards and volcanic islands, drought-hardy native grapes, saline whites, and reds reclaiming "rustic". With water scarcer every year, the focus has moved towards character over quantity, often by looking back at forgotten varieties and old practices.
About the speaker
Nika Shevela DipWSET is a Barcelona-based wine educator and communicator specialising in Spanish wine. She came to wine from translation, and her work still sits where wine, culture and communication meet.
Today she teaches at several hospitality and wine schools, including ours, and consults for a number of Spanish DOs and international drinks brands. She joins us from the Mediterranean's Catalan shore, the starting point of the masterclass journey.
We look forward to welcoming you!
