Spotlight on Spain: Ebro River Valley

🌍🍷We continue our spotlight on Spain in the Ebro River Valley, home to the celebrated Rioja region and a growing cast of other exciting appellations.

đź“– Ebro River Valley key facts:

  • The Ebro River, spanning over 900 km, is the longest river in Spain, snaking between the Sierra Cantábrica and the Sierra Demanda. Its tributaries have helped carve out vineyards celebrated for at least two centuries.

  • The region spans parts of the Basque Country, La Rioja, Navarra, and Aragon.

  • Its key DOs are red-wine-focused DOCa Rioja and DO Navarra; and the four Garnacha-driven DOs in AragĂłn: DO Campo de Borja, DO Calatayud, DO Cariñena, and DO Somontano.

  • Additional designations include VdT 3 Riberas, VdT Bajo AragĂłn, VdT Ribera del Gállego-Cinco Villas, VdT ValdejalĂłn, and VdT Valles de Sadacia. There are also four Vinos de Pago appellations: ArĂnzano, AylĂ©s, Otazu and Prado de Irache.

  • The region's claim to fame is DOCa Rioja, mostly planted to Tempranillo and supported by Garnacha, Mazuelo (Cariñena), Graciano, and a growing number of other indigenous varieties.

  • Rioja is divided into three sub-regions (Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta, and Rioja Baja), each with distinct characteristics, though no formal quality hierarchy exists between them.

  • DOCa Rioja wines use traditional ageing categories of GenĂ©rico, Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva, with more stringent requirements compared to other appellations.

  • DO Navarra sits immediately to the east of Rioja, sharing similar grape varieties and traditions. Historically anchored by Garnacha, the DO has increasingly embraced international varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot, alongside its traditional grape base, which also features Tempranillo.

  • The four Aragonese DOs (Campo de Borja, Calatayud, Cariñena, and Somontano) are growing in international recognition. Garnacha is the primary driver across all four, even in DO Cariñena, where its namesake grape Cariñena (Mazuelo) is in fact only minimally planted.

🔎Did you know?

  • Aragon was once a powerful kingdom, ruling over the western Mediterranean empire of the Crown of Aragon. Viticulture has been practised in these former royal lands since the 2nd century BC.

  • Modern, forward-thinking co-operatives still dominate some of the Ebro River Valley appellations: in DO Cariñena, they account for more than 85% of the total production in value.

  • Until the 1980s, Navarra was best known for its traditional rosĂ© wines and its still prized for its intensely-coloured traditional rosado styles.

  • For much of the 20th century, native white varieties in Rioja,  including Garnacha Blanca, Maturana Blanca, and MalvasĂa de Rioja, were largely sidelined in favour of the high-yielding Viura. Their revival began in 2009, when the Consejo Regulador actively encouraged the replanting of these varieties, several of which had been brought to the brink of extinction.
