Wines of the World Series: Spotlight on Argentina – Malbec 🇦🇷

Ahead of the upcoming masterclass on Argentinian wines, dedicated to Malbec at the Berlin Wine School, I’m sharing a few essential insights to get you in the right mindset and build some anticipation.

Even if you’re not attending, this might inspire your next wine discovery!

Where?

Malbec finds its most compelling expression in Mendoza, nestled along the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains:

-Key areas include Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley

-Located between 32° and 34° south latitude

-Vineyards range from around 700m up to 1,500m+ in elevation

-Water supply depends almost entirely on snowmelt flowing down from the Andes

And of course it doesn't stay here, Malbec is planted all over Argentina, from North to South.

Climate and soil in Mendoza show arid continental conditions with intense sunlight and minimal precipitation:

-Marked temperature shifts between day and night help retain freshness

-Soils are predominantly alluvial—combinations of gravel, sand, and limestone

-Older vine material plays an important role, particularly in traditional zones

Terroir & Expression

One of Malbec’s greatest strengths is its adaptability—it acts almost like a lens through which terroir becomes visible. Across Argentina, the same grape variety can deliver strikingly different profiles depending on altitude, latitude, and soil composition.

In the Calchaquí Valleys in the north, expect intensity, concentration, and sun-driven power due to extreme altitude and radiation. In and around Mendoza, the spectrum is broad—from the classic, structured style of Luján to the fresher, more linear expressions of the Uco Valley. Further south, in Patagonia, cooler conditions bring more elegance, subtlety, and often a more herbal or savory edge.

This diversity is exactly what we’ll explore in the tasting—same variety, radically different identities shaped by place.

Appellation & Production context

Rather than a rigid appellation system, Argentina relies on geographical indications (GIs) such as Mendoza and Uco Valley.

Malbec has become the emblematic variety of Argentina, though its origins trace back to Cahors, it has developed a distinct identity here. There is a growing emphasis on site expression, precision viticulture, and micro-terroirs.
