Wines of the World Series: Spotlight on Greece – PDO Amyndeon
Ahead of our upcoming masterclass on Greece's Amyndeon Plateau this Thursday, 19 March 2026, I'm sharing some key highlights about this cool-climate region to get you focused and excited!
Whether you're joining the class or not, this may spark inspiration for your next wine adventure! 🗺️✨
📍 Where?
One of the northernmost PDOs in Greece, approximately 40°41' N latitude
Vineyards around the town of Amyntaio in Florina district, in the northwest Greek region of Macedonia 🏔️
570–750m altitude plateau
Lakes Vegoritida & Petron provide cooling influence to vineyards
Three mountains: Vermio (2,052m), Vitsi (2,128m), and Voras (2,554m) protect the vineyards from maritime influences and cold winds from the north.

🌡️ Climate & Soils
Continental & cool, with snowy winters, refreshing summer winds
Typically sandy, alluvial soils
Some very old vines present.

📜 PDO Rules
Established 1972
100% Xinomavro only
Production of still reds + rosés (incl. sparkling rosé!)
While Xinomavro is the only permitted grape for the PDO appellation, many other varieties are planted throughout the region for larger regional appellations such as PGI Florina. These varieties represent the indigenous Greek varieties such as Roditis and Malagousia as well as the international ones Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Tannat.
🍷 Wine Styles
Still reds: pale, floral, red fruits, high acid, fine tannins, age-worthy! 🍒
Rosés: dry to off-dry still
Sparkling wines: lots of refreshing acidity and delicate pure red fruit flavours
